An exotic landscape of trees, architecture, and delicate foliage unfolds across the porcelain-like earthenware, softened by the wonderfully characteristic blurred edges of early flow blue decoration.

The handleless tea bowl recalls an earlier English tradition of taking tea, when these elegant little vessels were held directly in the hand. Paired with its deeply dished saucer, this is a lovely example of 19th-century English pottery, with all the romance of a well-traveled antique. Equally appealing displayed in a collected china cabinet, nestled among other blue transferware, or simply admired for its history.

Details

· Maker: John Maddock, Staffordshire, England

· Pattern: Hindustan

· Period: Victorian, 19th century; possibly c. 1840–1860

· Material: Glazed earthenware

· Decoration: Cobalt blue flow blue transferware

· Form: Handleless tea bowl with matching saucer

· Markings: Maddock backstamp on saucer

· Dimensions: 3”H cup in saucer/6” diameter saucer

· Condition: Extensive age-related crazing, with visible rim chips and hairlines.
