The scene is surrounded by an especially elaborate series of geometric and architectural motifs, scrolling florals, and decorative borders. The combination gives this large platter wonderful graphic presence while retaining the romantic Chinoiserie character associated with 19th-century transferware. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe reverse bears an unusual circular brown printed factory mark reading \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“MANUFACTORY”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, with a rooster or cockerel at its center and the initials \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“A P C”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e below. Additional factory marks include a separately printed brown \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e3\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and an impressed \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e1 within a double circle\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. While these marks are distinctive, I have not been able to conclusively identify the manufacturer and have therefore chosen to leave the maker unattributed rather than make an uncertain attribution. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAlso retained on the reverse is an old handwritten Italian dealer label reading \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Compagnia delle Indie Inglese, XIX Sec.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, translating approximately to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“English East India Company, 19th century.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e I believe the notation was intended as an earlier dealer attribution or description of the platter’s English\/East India-inspired character. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eVery good antique condition with no cracks. There are a couple of small, very old chips to the underside edge that are not visible when viewed from the front, along with some surface staining, wear and a rough area along the rim. These age-related imperfections are consistent with the platter’s long history and, in my opinion, add to its wonderfully timeworn character.
