Around the turn of the century, color prints of Scottish Highland scenes hung in parlors across America, and painters copied them in oil to bring home a "real" painting. Here a still loch winds between green mountains past a small sailboat, a herdsman drives his cattle along a dirt track, and geese wander near a thatched stone cottage.

About the artist: Ernst Hartenfeld was an itinerant Pennsylvania painter, active from about 1909 into the 1930s. The Morning Call reported that owners of the Broad Street Saloon in Emmaus, PA, found a 5 x 8-foot Hartenfeld landscape hidden under dining room wallpaper. He is said to have painted murals throughout the building in exchange for room and board. Since so much of his work went onto walls, signed easel paintings like this one are rarely seen.

Details:

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1914

Ornate gilt composition frame, period-appropriate

28 x 34 in.

Condition: The color is remarkably vibrant.
