Its romantic landscape depicts the Ponte Salaro near Rome, derived from a late eighteenth-century view of the Italian countryside. Rendered in a wonderfully rich, dark cobalt blue against a warm creamy ground, the scene is surrounded by an elaborate floral border and distinctive gadrooned edge. This substantial 12½-inch chop plate, or round serving platter, can be dated precisely to July 1924 through the impressed “L24” factory date mark on the reverse. It also retains the early blue printed Copeland Spode Tower backstamp. Now more than a century old, it is a beautifully preserved example of early twentieth-century English transferware. Originally intended as a serving piece, the generous round form remains wonderfully versatile today. Use it for serving meats, appetizers, pastries or desserts, layer it into a collected table setting, or display it on a hutch, plate rack or wall where its large-scale cobalt Tower scene can be fully appreciated. Very good antique condition with no chips or cracks. Usual surface and utensil wear consistent with age and more than a century of use.
