Inspired by one of the most celebrated oyster servers of the Victorian era, this beautiful antique French majolica oyster plate is attributed and styled after the iconic George Jones patented Boteler oyster server. Rich in history and artistry, it captures the elegance of one of the most innovative ceramic designs of the late 19th century.
On June 16, 1874, the United States Patent Office issued Patent No. 7,491, the first patent ever granted for an oyster server. The patent was registered by Washington, D.C. ceramics importer and retailer John W. Boteler, whose ingenious design featured four oyster wells surrounding a central condiment well intended for lemon, salt, or pepper, along with a sculptural handle for ease of service. Boteler continued his innovation in 1875, introducing the patented Boteler luncheon plate, another distinctive ceramic form inspired by the original oyster server.
While this example is not an original George Jones production, it is an authentic antique French interpretation of the celebrated Boteler design. These French reproductions were crafted during the late 19th century and are highly collectible in their own right, beautifully capturing the sculptural elegance of the original while showcasing the artistry of French majolica. Antique examples such as this are uncommonly found today, making it a wonderful addition to any serious majolica or oyster plate collection.
Beautifully molded with four shell-form oyster wells surrounding a soft lavender center well and finished in delicate shades of aqua, blush, olive green, and warm ochre, this piece is as decorative as it is historic. Vintage and antique items cannot be refunded or returned unless it has been damaged in the shipping process. We require photos of the item(s) and packaging, (which will help us to assess the handling process and prevent further losses.) After which point you will be issued a full refund on your order.

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

Damages and issues
Within 10 days of delivery - Please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.
Exceptions / non-returnable items

Each item has its own unique story, if you are not happy with the item then we hope we can continue your story with our company and find something that suits you better. That item is now yours, we can only refund you in store credit for Shoplilliangrey.com if the item was damaged in the shipping process. (Some items have endured some alterations to their original state and will be sold AS IS. Please take note of each item's description to see if the unique character is suitable to you.)
Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.
Exchanges
The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item. You have 7 days from the delivery date to initiate your return on NEW items only.
Refunds
We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. If approved, you’ll be automatically refunded in store credit once approved.
