18th Century Enoch Wood Creamware Pierced Basket Stand, c. 1784–1792

A beautiful and increasingly scarce example of late 18th-century English creamware, this oval pierced basket stand is attributed to Enoch Wood of Burslem, Staffordshire, and dates to approximately 1784–1792. The shallow oval form is beautifully molded with an intricate basketweave pattern radiating outward from a small geometric motif at the center. A broad reticulated border surrounds the basketweave surface, formed by repeating elongated piercings separated by raised molded ribs. The warm cream-colored glaze, fine crazing, subtle firing imperfections, and softly aged surface give the piece the unmistakable character of early English earthenware. The underside bears a faint impressed mark consisting of a W followed by three small star- or asterisk-like impressions. This distinctive impressed Wxxx mark is documented for E. Wood of Burslem, c.1784-1792. Enoch Wood established his pottery business in Burslem in 1784, before entering the Wood & Caldwell partnership around 1790. Because the impression on this particular piece is faint, I have conservatively described the stand as attributed to Enoch Wood, rather than presenting the attribution as absolute. The form is also consistent with Wood’s production of the period. A documented Enoch Wood creamware basket and stand, circa 1790, of oval form has previously been offered at Christie’s, providing an especially relevant comparison for this surviving stand. Originally intended as the underdish or stand for a coordinating pierced creamware basket, this piece is equally beautiful displayed independently today. Its intricate basketweave molding and architectural openwork border make it particularly striking displayed on a plate rack, gallery wall, console, or layered among a collection of early English ceramics. More than two centuries after it was made, its imperfections are part of its story and a testament to its remarkable survival. Very good antique condition considering its approximately 235-year age. The piece exhibits overall age-related crazing, scattered discoloration and firing specks, and expected surface wear. There is one small glaze chip along the outer rim, a couple of tiny glaze losses within the molded basketweave surface, several small chips/losses to the underside foot rim, and one stable hairline through a small section of the pierced border. No significant restoration noted. Please review all photographs closely as they form part of the condition description.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.
Exchanges
The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item. You have 7 days from the delivery date to initiate your return on NEW items only.
Refunds
