A beautiful example of Georgian craftsmanship, these exquisite 18th-century sterling silver sugar tongs bring more than two centuries of history and elegance to the art of entertaining. Dating to the reign of King George III, circa 1780–1784, these antique English sugar tongs are attributed to London silversmith Benjamin Mountigue, whose work is associated with the refined Neoclassical silver designs of the late Georgian period. The slender, gracefully shaped arms feature intricate bright-cut engraving, with flowing ribbon-like motifs, delicate punched detailing, and finely worked borders. The decoration extends toward the beautifully fluted, rounded gripping ends, creating an exceptionally elegant silhouette. The tongs bear an English lion passant sterling silver hallmark alongside a partially worn rectangular maker’s mark. The surviving initials and distinctive punch are consistent with the recorded BM mark of Benjamin Mountigue, supporting the attribution. Originally intended for serving sugar at the Georgian tea table, these charming tongs remain wonderfully functional more than two centuries later. Equally lovely for serving sugar cubes at afternoon tea or adding a touch of history to a thoughtfully appointed table, they are a beautiful example of the enduring appeal of antique English silver. Excellent antique condition, with light surface wear and patina consistent with age and use. The bright-cut engraving remains beautifully defined. The tongs retain excellent spring tension, open and close smoothly, and are fully functional. The maker’s mark shows age-related wear, with one initial partially obscured. A remarkable little piece of Georgian history, ready to be enjoyed and treasured for generations to come.
