A beautiful pair of early 19th-century English brown transferware plates in the Corinthian pattern, dating to approximately the 1830s–1840s. Each plate features an intricately detailed romantic landscape at its center, with classical ruins and architecture set among trees, water, and distant scenery. A richly patterned floral border surrounds the scene, all rendered in warm brown transfer against an aged cream ground. The gently shaped edges and nearly two centuries of patina give these small plates wonderful character. The reverse bears the decorative “Corinthian” backstamp within an ivy wreath, with the letter B beneath. This same Corinthian backstamp appears on the matching stand of a covered tureen from the collection whose tureen body is separately marked Tidmarsh & Brown, No. 4 Rosemary Lane, London. Historical records document Tidmarsh & Brown at that London address by the 1830s as a china and earthenware concern associated with Staffordshire wares. The exact pottery responsible for manufacturing the Corinthian service has not been conclusively identified. We have therefore conservatively catalogued these plates as English manufacture, rather than assigning them to a specific pottery. The ceramic body and subtle cool blue cast visible where the glaze pools are consistent with English pearlware of the period. A closely corresponding Corinthian tureen and stand has also been documented as pearlware and dated circa 1830. As the ceramic body has not been independently tested, we describe the material conservatively as pearlware / glazed earthenware. Very good antique condition for their age with no chips or cracks. Both plates exhibit age-related crazing and scattered browning/staining, along with slight roughness to portions of the edges and other expected evidence of age and use. These characteristics are consistent with early 19th-century earthenware and contribute to their wonderfully timeworn appearance. Sourced in Italy, these nearly 200-year-old plates are wonderful examples of the historic movement of English ceramics throughout Europe. Their warm cream ground, rich brown transfer decoration, and beautifully aged surfaces make them a natural addition to my Blue, Cream & Brown Collection. Display them on a plate rack or gallery wall, layer them into a collected tablescape, or simply enjoy them as small examples of early English transferware.

We have a 7-day return policy on NEW items, which means you have 7 days after receiving your item to request a return. You will be refunded in store credit to be spent at Shoplilliangrey.com within 6 months.
Vintage and antique items cannot be refunded or returned unless it has been damaged in the shipping process. We require photos of the item(s) and packaging, (which will help us to assess the handling process and prevent further losses.) After which point you will be issued a full refund on your order.

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

Damages and issues
Within 10 days of delivery - Please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.
Exceptions / non-returnable items

Each item has its own unique story, if you are not happy with the item then we hope we can continue your story with our company and find something that suits you better. That item is now yours, we can only refund you in store credit for Shoplilliangrey.com if the item was damaged in the shipping process. (Some items have endured some alterations to their original state and will be sold AS IS. Please take note of each item's description to see if the unique character is suitable to you.)
Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.
Exchanges
The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item. You have 7 days from the delivery date to initiate your return on NEW items only.
Refunds
We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. If approved, you’ll be automatically refunded in store credit once approved.
