An exceptional early 19th-century Spode drainer in the highly sought-after India pattern, dating to approximately 1820. Beautifully decorated in rich cobalt blue transferware, this rare piece features the romantic landscape scenes and intricate floral motifs that helped establish Spode as one of England’s most celebrated pottery manufacturers. Spode was among the pioneers of underglaze blue transfer printing, a technique that transformed English ceramics during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Originally intended to sit within a matching meat or fish platter, drainers were designed to elevate food above collected juices. Today, surviving examples are highly prized by collectors and decorators alike, particularly when found as stand-alone display pieces.
This drainer showcases two distinct India pattern scenes—one featuring a picturesque architectural landscape and the other an elaborate chinoiserie-inspired floral design. The generous scale and striking blue-and-white palette make it a beautiful display piece for a wall gallery, shelf, plate rack, or tablescape.

A rare and increasingly difficult-to-find early Spode form that appeals to collectors of transferware, blue and white ceramics, English pottery, and historic tableware.
Collector Notes
This is one of the more desirable forms in early transferware collecting. Drainers were often discarded when their matching platters broke, making surviving examples considerably scarcer than standard platters or plates. Comparable early Spode drainers from the early 1800s regularly command strong collector interest, especially those retaining crisp transfer decoration and large display size.

Vintage and antique items cannot be refunded or returned unless it has been damaged in the shipping process. We require photos of the item(s) and packaging, (which will help us to assess the handling process and prevent further losses.) After which point you will be issued a full refund on your order.

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

Damages and issues
Within 10 days of delivery - Please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.
Exceptions / non-returnable items

That item is now yours, we can only refund you in store credit for Shoplilliangrey.com if the item was damaged in the shipping process. (Some items have endured some alterations to their original state and will be sold AS IS. Please take note of each item's description to see if the unique character is suitable to you.)
Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.
Exchanges
The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item. You have 7 days from the delivery date to initiate your return on NEW items only.
Refunds
We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. If approved, you’ll be automatically refunded in store credit once approved.
