A rare surviving trio of custom yacht service bowls created by Spode Copeland in 1927, privately commissioned for a vessel sailing within the elite circles of the New York Yacht Club. Each piece features crossed gilt flag staffs bearing the club burgee and the owner’s private signal flag, painted by hand and enriched with raised gold detailing.

This is not a retail pattern, but a bespoke commission produced by Copeland’s decorators for private onboard use. The bowls carry:

• the historic SPODE COPELANDS CHINA — ENGLAND backstamp
• the impressed date code “27” confirming 1927 production
• the hand-painted pattern code “A290P”, indicating a special commission order

Yacht china from this period was ordered in exceptionally small quantities — often 6–18 place settings at most, making surviving examples extremely scarce, especially in pristine condition.

Each bowl measures 9” in diameter, with a wide rim designed to showcase the hand-enameled burgees. The artistry reflects the refined aesthetic of the Golden Age of American yachting, when ocean-going vessels carried custom silver, porcelain, and linens bearing the owner’s private flags.

Provenance & Research:

Based on date, pattern code, and the specific private signal design, these have been attributed to an early 20th-century New York Yacht Club owner active in the late 1920s. Research includes comparison against Lloyd’s Register of American Yachts (1926–1928) and the NYYC Yearbook, with the yacht burgee design consistent with private signals from that era.
