Antique L. Straus & Sons Limoges France Cobalt Flow Blue & White W/Gold Oyster Plate, Circa 1900 – 9”D |

A striking antique French porcelain oyster plate by L. Straus & Sons, dating to approximately circa 1900.

Made in Limoges, France, the plate features six deeply molded oyster wells arranged around a circular central well. Each shell-shaped compartment is finished in a dramatic graduated palette of rich cobalt blue, pale celadon-green, cream and soft golden tones, creating an almost iridescent effect beneath the glaze.

Fine gilt outlining follows each individual well, while the scalloped outer rim is finished with broad hand-applied gilding. A delicate gilt floral motif decorates the center well.

The underside bears the blue L. Straus & Sons / Limoges / France mark. L. Straus & Sons was the prominent New York importer and tableware firm founded by the Straus family, whose business supplied fine European porcelain to the American luxury market during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Straus family was also closely connected with Macy’s, where the firm operated its china and glass department. 

Oyster plates became particularly fashionable during the Victorian and Gilded Age period, when elaborate oyster courses were an important part of formal dining. Today, examples with strong cobalt coloration and sculptural wells are especially decorative for display as well as collectible tableware.
