A striking mid-19th-century English equestrian portrait attributed to John E. Ferneley Sr. (1782–1860), one of the most celebrated British sporting painters of his period.

Rendered in oil on canvas, the composition depicts a standing thoroughbred with a rich bay coat and white stockings to the rear legs, posed against an expansive English countryside. A distant town, prominent church steeple, fencing, and mill add remarkable depth and sense of place to the landscape.

The reverse is particularly noteworthy. The canvas bears an ink stamp for George Rowney & Co., 51 Rathbone Place, London, an important British artists’ supplier active at that address during the mid-19th century. An old label affixed to the stretcher reads “FERNELEY, SNR.”, supporting the longstanding attribution to John E. Ferneley Sr.

Unsigned and offered as attributed to John E. Ferneley Sr. rather than definitively authenticated, this is nevertheless a compelling example of 19th-century British sporting art with strong period details and exceptional decorative presence.

A beautiful choice for an equestrian collection, English country interior, library, study, or layered gallery wall.

The painting remains on its original canvas and shows age-related wear consistent with a mid-19th-century work. There is a fair amount of prior professional conservation and overpainting present throughout all four quadrants, visible under UV examination. The restoration appears to have been professionally executed and is consistent with the age and history of the piece. Please review all photographs closely, including the UV image, as they form part of the condition description. As with all antique works, signs of age, surface wear, craquelure, restoration, and other imperfections should be expected and are part of the character of the piece.
