A beautiful antique sterling silver and tortoiseshell page turner, made by Levi & Salaman of Birmingham.

This petite desk accessory features a richly colored polished tortoiseshell blade paired with a tapered sterling silver handle. The contrast between the warm mottled shell and cool silver gives the piece a particularly elegant, understated look.

The silver is hallmarked L&S for Levi & Salaman, along with the Birmingham anchor and lion passant for sterling silver. A date letter is also present.

Originally used for turning the pages of books and correspondence without directly handling the paper, pieces like this were refined accessories for a gentleman’s or lady’s writing desk, library, or dressing table. Today, it makes a beautiful collectible object displayed alongside antique books, calling card cases, writing implements, and other desk treasures.
