Antique Victorian Mahogany Smoking Compendium with Cut Crystal Tobacco Jar & Fitted Interior, c. 1890–1910 – 12”W

A wonderfully handsome antique Victorian smoking compendium crafted in richly figured mahogany and retaining its beautifully fitted interior.

Opening the hinged lid reveals a striking red and gold patterned lining along with a fitted arrangement of two lidded wooden compartments flanking a substantial cut-crystal tobacco jar. Originally intended for a gentleman’s desk or smoking room, pieces like this were designed to keep tobacco and smoking accessories neatly contained while remaining decorative enough to display prominently in a library or study.

The crystal vessel is particularly beautiful, with deeply cut geometric decoration that catches the light beautifully against the dark mahogany case. The two side compartments provide additional storage and make the interior almost architectural in its presentation.

Today, it would make an exceptional decorative desk box, collector’s piece, or conversation piece in a library, office, bar, or gentleman’s dressing area. The fitted compartments could also easily be repurposed for watches, jewelry, cufflinks, correspondence, or other small treasures.

The exterior has been restored and presents beautifully while retaining the warmth and character expected of an antique piece.

Condition: Good antique condition. Exterior has been restored. Cut-crystal tobacco jar has chips and a crack; the crack appears stable. No key is present. Additional age-related wear and surface variation consistent with antique use. Please review photographs carefully.
