An exceptional piece of early 19th-century Historical Staffordshire, this blue and white transferware plate was produced by James and Ralph Clews of Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1829–1834, as part of their celebrated Picturesque Views series made for the American market.
The central transfer depicts an early view of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with steamboats traveling along the river against a fascinating waterfront of buildings and smoking industrial chimneys. The scene is surrounded by an elaborate floral border incorporating scrolling foliage, oversized blossoms, birds, and geometric details.
The reverse bears the blue scenic “Picturesque Views / Pittsburgh Pa.” mark.
This historically significant pattern is represented in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which catalogs its example as Picturesque Views / Pittsburgh Pa., by James and Ralph Clews, circa 1829–1834. The museum’s example measures the same 10½ inches in diameter.
A comparable Clews Picturesque Views / Pittsburgh, Pa. plate was also sold at auction by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in March 2026 for $375 including buyer’s premium. This auction result is included for reference only; condition and value can vary between individual examples.

Condition — AS-IS:
Offered AS-IS due to one crack extending from the rim. There are no chips. Age-related crazing, discoloration, surface wear, and other characteristics consistent with a nearly 200-year-old piece are present. Please review all photographs carefully as they are considered part of the condition description.
A wonderful opportunity to own a documented example of early American historical Staffordshire with a particularly compelling connection to the history of Pittsburgh.

We have a 7-day return policy on NEW items, which means you have 7 days after receiving your item to request a return. You will be refunded in store credit to be spent at Shoplilliangrey.com within 6 months.
Vintage and antique items cannot be refunded or returned unless it has been damaged in the shipping process. We require photos of the item(s) and packaging, (which will help us to assess the handling process and prevent further losses.) After which point you will be issued a full refund on your order.
To start a return, you can contact us at contact@shoplilliangrey.com. Please note that returns will need to be sent to the return address on the original shipping label.
If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

Damages and issues

Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.
Exchanges
The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item. You have 7 days from the delivery date to initiate your return on NEW items only.
Refunds
