A striking example of late Victorian English transferware, this large antique serving platter was produced by W. T. Copeland & Sons of Stoke-on-Trent, England, in the beautifully graphic Primrose pattern. Dating to January 1883, the platter is a wonderful example of the richly patterned ceramics associated with the Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century. Primrose features an elaborate stylized floral medallion at its center, composed of alternating petals filled with tiny blossoms and contrasting brown grounds. Delicate flowering vines surround the central motif, while the broad border is densely decorated with repeating flowers framed by finely rendered geometric leaf bands. Executed in warm brown transfer against a creamy earthenware ground, the pattern has an almost textile-like quality and is especially beautiful displayed as a decorative piece. The Primrose design was registered by Copeland in 1881, and this particular platter bears several period marks to the reverse, including the printed Primrose pattern mark and registration diamond, an impressed Copeland mark, and an impressed J/83 date mark. Copeland introduced its letter-and-number dating system in 1870, with the letter indicating the month and the two numerals the year; J/83 identifies this example as having been manufactured in January 1883. At an impressive 17 inches wide, the platter has wonderful presence and would be equally beautiful displayed on a plate wall, propped on a shelf or hutch, or incorporated into a collection of antique brown transferware and English ceramics. Its warm brown-and-cream palette makes it particularly versatile for traditional, English country and collected European-inspired interiors. Excellent antique condition overall with normal wear consistent with approximately 143 years of age and use. There is one chip to the underside of the outer edge, which is not visible from the front and does not detract from its presentation. A few very small glaze nicks/fleabites are present along the outer edge; these are largely imperceptible visually but can be felt when running a finger along the rim. Vintage and antique items cannot be refunded or returned unless it has been damaged in the shipping process. We require photos of the item(s) and packaging, (which will help us to assess the handling process and prevent further losses.) After which point you will be issued a full refund on your order.

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.
Exchanges
The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item. You have 7 days from the delivery date to initiate your return on NEW items only.
Refunds
