Antique Victorian Mother of Pearl & Abalone Calling Card Case with Sterling Silver Cartouche, c. 1880 – 3.25”

A beautiful antique Victorian calling card case crafted in luminous mother of pearl and richly colored abalone shell.

The exterior is arranged in a geometric mosaic of pale iridescent mother-of-pearl panels, framed and accented with striking abalone shell showing flashes of green, blue, violet, and bronze. A diamond-shaped engraved silver cartouche centers the front, giving the case a wonderfully refined finish.

The hinged top opens with its original side push-button clasp, which remains functional, and reveals a black velvet-lined interior. Compact and beautifully made, the case holds approximately two to three modern cards.

Victorian calling card cases were fashionable personal accessories used to carry visiting cards during social calls. Today, this example works equally well as a collectible object, small card holder, or decorative desk accessory.
