Antique Victorian Mother of Pearl Calling Card Case with Engraved Silver Floral Cartouche, Original Blue Interior, c. 1860–1880 – 4”

An exceptional antique Victorian calling card case, beautifully constructed from luminous panels of mother of pearl and centered with an engraved silver floral cartouche.

The entire exterior is covered in individually fitted geometric sections of nacre, creating a wonderful patchwork of soft ivory, silver, pink, green, and blue iridescence that changes dramatically with the light. The front is further embellished with finely engraved linear decoration and a diamond-shaped silver cartouche chased with a delicate floral motif.

The hinged case opens to reveal its original blue velvet/silk interior, remarkably well preserved for its age. The case retains its side clasp and closes securely.

Calling card cases such as this were fashionable personal accessories during the Victorian period, used to carry visiting cards when making social calls. Today, it remains wonderfully functional for a few business cards while also being a beautiful collector’s piece for a desk, vanity, or cabinet of curiosities.

This example is particularly desirable for its complete mother-of-pearl surface, original interior, decorative silver mount, and exceptional overall condition.
